History of Bee Cave
Bee Cave is rich in history, dating back as early as the 1850s. A man by the name of Dietrich Bohls longed to move his family away from the confines of Austin and its heady influence. During this time, Indians occupied the land west of Austin, and the number of settlers in the area was minimal. The Bohls family became one of the first families to permanently settle on the land that would later become Bee Cave.
By the 1860s, Western Travis County was blossoming into an increasingly popular place for families. The original settlers cleared the land, paving the way for future homes and farms. As more settlers made their home here, the region became known as "the Bee Caves area." Settlers gave the area its name for the Mexican honeybees that lived in the banks of both Barton Creek and Little Barton Creek.
In 1871, a general store was opened at the intersection that would later become State Highway 71 and Hamilton Pool Road. Soon afterwards, a cigar factory and cotton gin were built, and in 1873, a post office opened within the general store. The local residents collaborated to build a school building on land given to the community by the Freitag family. The residents of Bee Cave were caring individuals, eager to lend a hand. To this day, the Bee Cave community has retained its slow pace and warm, pleasant atmosphere.
As time progressed, more families moved to the Bee Cave area. During the 1980s, the city of Austin attempted several annexations, with the intention to legally include Bee Cave in the city of Austin. To avoid being annexed by Austin, many communities in the Lake Travis area voted to become incorporated. Bee Cave residents were also concerned about possible annexation, and as a result, citizens formed a board known as the Concerned Landowners and Citizens Organization (CLACO). It was the board's intention to overcome the obstacles that were interfering with the process of incorporation for Bee Cave, including entities such as Travis County, the City of Austin, the Sierra Club, and a variety of other environmental groups. After hard work and persistence, the Village of Bee Cave officially became incorporated in 1987.
